Mozambique continues to experience significant impacts from sustained heavy rainfall and flooding across the Southern, Central and Northern regions as of 27 March 2026. Precipitation levels continue to be monitored across the Incomáti, Limpopo, Save, Búzi, Púngoè, Licungo, Zambeze, Megaruma, Montepuez, Messalo and Rovuma river basins, with forecast rainfall expected to intensify surface runoff and further elevate fiood risk.
Anticipatory Action protocols for flooding were activated across high-risk provinces from 14 March 2026, enabling the early rollout of predefined measures as rainfall and river levels increased. Between 7 and 27 March 2026, an estimated 165,656 individuals (36,963 households) were affected, with the most severe impacts recorded in the southern and central provinces, particularly in areas already impacted during the January-February 2026 flooding. These figures build on those reported in Flash Update No. 8, bringing the total number of people affected since January 2026 to 869,656 individuals (203,663 households).
As of 27 March 2026, a total of 38 accommodation centres (ACs) remain operational, hosting 20,172 individuals (5,921 households), while most centres established in response to the January-February flooding have now been deactivated. Individuals currently staying in ACs represent 11 per cent of the total affected population, as many people have begun returning to their areas of origin, partly due to limited support in some centres. A significant proportion of displaced households, particularly those whose homes have been destroyed, flooded, or remain inaccessible, are residing outside formal ACs. These populations are being hosted by relatives, accommodated in community facilities, or sheltering in spontaneous and informal sites that remain largely unmonitored. Among the population in ACs, 19 per cent are men, 33 per cent women, and 48 per cent children.
