Mozambique - Escalating violence and mass displacement (DG ECHO, IOM DTM) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 July 2025)

  • Between 20 and 26 July 2025, Cabo Delgado province experienced a surge in violence that significantly impacted civilian safety and access to essential services.
  • Escalating attacks including burning of homes, police stations, schools, and health facilities have heightened fears of violence from Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs) in Muidumbe, Ancuabe, and Chiure districts. Approximately 26,870 people have been displaced during the period, out of which 23,202 in the Chiure district.
  • Additionally, movements from nearby villages to schools, host communities, and other temporary shelters within the Chiure administrative centre were observed, indicating an expected increase in the number of new arrivals.
