Mozambique: Emergency response to flood victims in Sofala


General
Action contre la Faim has already set it base at Muxungue in Chibabava district. The operation has been starting with food distribution to vulnerable affected population. The assessment on need of seed and tools is under clarification with Agriculture Department and beneficiaries. The water sanitation team has started water well disaffected & rehabilitation . There is very ambiance atmosphere of coordination among organisation who present in the area.

The road from Muxungue to Chibabava is open. The road to Tronca, and Magunde is difficult after one heavy rain. Waiting for another week to test the road to Goonda Madjaca and Jeromme

The road to Matarara is no problem ( access to Mudala population )

Less rain during this week in the area , only once. Buzi river is going down quickly but keeping strong current. The Revue is going down slower.

Assessment

The preliminary assessment had been conducted during 2nd and 3rd week. The 3 administrative post of Chibabava had been working on update N° of population flood affected.

Chibabava Sede: 18 areas along Buzi river are identified with total 4,453 flood affected families.

Goonda: 10 areas located on Buzi, Lusite, and Revue river population affected 3,849 families

Muxungue: 4 areas 523 families

Total population affected: 8,825 families

The more precised data will be update at registration for food distribution, with Regulado and district staffs. Expected by end of 1st week of April , the N°of flood affected population will be confirmed.

Activity implemented

1/ WATER AND SANITATION

Buzi District: 9 water pumps had been rehabilitated, and disaffected in Buzi sede,
Machanga: 8 wells have been disaffected, only 2 wells have hand pump.
Divinhi: 1 wells has been disaffected
Chibabava: 1 well has been dis affected at Magunde

2/ FOOD DISTRIBUTION

22nd March , Action Contre la Faim is official presentation to the district administrator as a partnership with WFP and INGC for food distribution in Chibabava district. The food for March had been finished delivery to Chibabava warehouse on 25th March. While Action contre la Faim is requesting for delivery of food by air to Goonda Madjaca,, the most remote area of the district.

Total food received at Chibabava and Muxungue by INGC together with ACF are mention below :

Maize: 109.65 T
Pease: 20.00 T
Sugar: 10.50 T
Oil: 10.00 T

The target beneficiaries are planed for 17.575 flood affected persons in March. For April the food had been increased , which could cover approx. 6,200 families.

Another deliveries during 24th - 30th by air to Goonda Madjaca for 1742 people ( 385 families)

ACF has 2 teams., to conduct food distribution.

Since 27th - 31st Mar. ACF had distributed food to total 1764 families , 9200 people had received food.

Several area still no access need consideration for food delivery by air : Jeromme, Macuni, Macuni Masse Quessa , Chinhica , and Goonda Madjaca

Possibility to access after one week no rain : Tronca, Jambe

3. AGRICULTURE : SEED & TOOLS DISTRIBUTION

DPA had agreed to deliver 30 T of Mutaba maize seed to Chibabava, delivery expected on next 3rd. Monday, April

ACF is preparing its 3,500 tool kits and the seed balance.

4. NON FOOD ITEMS : RESSETLEMENT KITS

All the 3,500 ACF domestic kits are almost completed

CCM, Concern, LWF and Action Contre la Faim are working closely together to allocate the available kits for beneficiaries in the same time as Action Contre la Faim conduct food distribution. 1650 kits had been distributed in Chibabava Sede.

5. NUTRITIONAL AND FOOD SECURITY ASSESSMENT

1st location for assessment is Goonda Madjaca during 4 days ,over night in the village. See attached Report.

2nd location , expected to access Divinhe, unfortunately not access to air transport, so the assessment is not yet carry out in this area

6. COORDINATION

Action contre la Faim is closely working with the Mozambican authorities : INGC, DPOPH, DPS, DPA, specificly with the local authorities of Chibabava District

Regularly formal and unformal meeting with NGOs in the field operation and at province level.

Weekly Plan 1st - 7th April 2000

1. WATER & SANITATION

Buzi: One team will go to Buzi / Guara-guara on Monday 3rd April (to see with CONCERN for Guara-guara)

Machanga: 7 more wells is planed for disaffected.

Divinhe: 6 wells is planed for disaffected ( 3 wells at remote area may delay due to accessibility.

Chibabava: 1 wells had been disaffected , team is continuing setting up the water treatment unit in Chibabava Sede
Plan for providing drinking water at several food distribution points.

If fund approuved, sending mobile team in different localities for chlorine distribution (chlorination at home)

2. FOOD DISTRIBUTION

The immediate distribution for flood affected population is planed and operated as table below

3. AGRICULTURE : SEED & TOOLS DISTRIBUTION

All the seed and tools are expected to be by Tuesday 4th April in Muxungue. All seed & tools will be ready for distribution in Goonda area, and launch distribution

4. NON FOOD ITEMS : RESSETLEMENT KITS

Expected to complete all the items for the kits during this week. Continue coordination for kits distribution with NGO's present in Chibabava.

5. NUTRITIONAL AND FOOD SECURITY ASSESSMENT

3rd location , the assessment is under going at Chinhica, Macuni ( Chibabava district), the report will be available by next week.
