Highlights 2024
In 2024, IOM and partners PRONANAC and ASMOG continued site management across 11 districts in Northern Mozambique with support from CERF, UK Aid, and USAID.
In 2024, Political instability, election unrest, and a cyclone significantly impacted humanitarian aid delivery and contributed to continued displacement. Northern Mozambique had a total of 577,545 IDPs and 610,732 returnees (IOM DTM, 08/2024). In May, several attacks in Macomia restricted humanitarian access in the preceding months, while access to Ibo remained volatile due to security-related sea traffic blockages.
October’s presidential elections triggered weeks of protests and unrest, further complicating operations. In December, Cyclone Chido devastated livelihoods, adding to existing challenges.
The program underwent a major shift throughout the year with the transfer of sites in Southern Cabo Delgado to local authorities and communities, reducing IOM’s role, including the collection and management of feedback.
This transition contributed to a mid-year drop-in feedback activity.
However, cases from Mocímboa da Praia surged in the last quarter, reflecting the increased presence of CCCM staff. Most feedback there was gathered through community meetings and covered a larger subset of the popualtion.
