Security Update

The month of April 2023 was relatively calm in most part of the districts as compared to previous period. However, the spotlight continued on Nangade and Macomia. Small groups of combatants continued to move within Nangade district, which was hemmed in by Rwandan presence in Mueda and Palma districts, as well as a full Ruvuma river, which blocked easy passage to Tanzania. …. assault on a Mozambican army base at Mandimba, which killed three troops, minor fights and sightings predominated. The apparent freedom of movement of insurgents in the district eventually resulted in the temporary closing of the Nangade-Mueda road on 1 May, prompting the first actions by Rwandan security forces in Nangade proper. On April 28, clashes between militants and "allied forces" were reported in Catupa forest. Multiple reports stated that Rwandan troops were active in the Nangade district by the end of April 2023.(Source ACLED).
