SITUATION UPDATE
In 2024, a total of 1.7 million people are targeted in Mozambique, including 1.24 million people in conflict-affected areas and another 429,623 people across the country to mitigate the risks and impacts of natural disasters.
By the end of June 2024, some 1.08M were reached, including 487,742 women and 534,640 children. People reached included IDPs (94 per cent of target), returnees (21 per cent of target) and host communities (over 100 per cent of target). Initially, host communities were defined as one person for every IDP. However, the response extended to many people who were impacted by the crisis but had remained in their homes, highlighting the broader scope of needs within these communities.
Of the 78 humanitarian organizations coordinating assistance through the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), a quarter is national non-governmental organizations (NNGOs). Despite their significant presence, NNGOs received less than 1 percent of the HRP funding, primarily through sub-grants from UN agencies. This highlights a critical gap in direct funding to local organizations that are often at the forefront of response efforts.
Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster (58 per cent), Nutrition Cluster (79 per cent), Education Cluster (44 per cent of target reached) and Food Security Cluster (Food Assistance 74 per cent) reported the highest level of achievement, while Shelter/NFIs (37 per cent) and WASH (37 per cent) reached the lowest numbers. The Food Security and Livelihoods partners reported achievements of 103 per cent. However, there is a considerable gap between food aid and livelihood interventions, with the latter reaching 42 per cent of the target.
At the end of June 2024, the HRP was 21 per cent funded, having received approximately U$85.2 million out of $413 million requested. An additional $7.1 million has been received outside the HRP framework. Funding imbalances among clusters persisted in 2024; all clusters received below 25 per cent of funding except for the Refugees and Coordination and Common Service sector.
