SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES
Historically, Mozambique has a been central part of global and regional migration and trade networks. Today, the country continues to play an important role in Southern Africa due to it’s strategic location and increasing movement of people within the country and across its’ borders. Migration has been a critical contributing factor to Mozambique’s development. Migration also remains a key strategy for sustaining basic livelihoods and seeking refuge from conflict and poverty. Successful migration experiences have been alleviating poverty and improving human development for many Mozambican families. However, many migrants and displaced people often live in impoverished conditions. IOM Mozambique’s 2024 - 2028 strategy is built on the Mission’s view of the potential opportunity to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It aims to leverage both internal and international migration to drive the country’s development and reduce inequalities. The link between migration and development, although not simple, is multifaceted. Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires safe, orderly and regular migration. Drawing on nearly 30 years of IOM experience in Mozambique, this strategy is shaped by the country’s needs, the Government of Mozambique’s priorities, and IOM’s strengths. It sets out a multi-faceted approach to transformative and empowering migration governance, aligning with the SDGs and the Government’s National Development Strategy. The three interrelated and mutually reinforcing Strategic Objectives are aligned with IOM’s global strategy, which calls for a new perspective and new approaches to realize the full promise of migration while leaving no one behind. The objectives aim to support Mozambique address migration and displacement challenges while seizing opportunities for transformative action. Fundamental to this realization is the collective and collaborative efforts undertaken with all relevant partners and stakeholders. Together with the United Nations Country Team, IOM remains committed to supporting the Government of Mozambique to capitalize on the benefits of well managed migration, which has a multiplier effect through society.
