Germany actively joins the efforts of the international community to deliver relief and assistance to the flood victims in Mozambique. In a phone call with UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer announced quick financial and pratical support.
On March 3, the amount of German humanitarian aid to the country runs up to 10 Million Deutschmarks (approx. 5 million US-Dollars).
As immediate response and contribution to the ongoing rescue operations in Mozambique, the German Government has decided to deploy three helicopters of the German Federal Police to the affected region on March 4 2000. This first contingent will be followed up by four German Air Force Helicopters and a medical contingent with 24 soldiers on Sunday, 5 March 2000.
In addition, German Forces began with the preparation of further deployment of teams with rescue boats and water recycling equipment as well as the provision of additional rotary and fixed wing rescue aircraft.
