Flash Update No.5 – Heavy rains and floods in central and southern Mozambique (As of 26 January 2026)

An estimated 652,000 people have been affected by flooding across southern and central Mozambique, particularly in Gaza, Maputo, and Sofala provinces, following heavy and persistent rainfall since mid-December. Over half are climate displaced, as their homes are flooded. The majority of the affected people, are in Gaza.

National response coordination structures remain at the Filipe Jacinto Nyusi Airport in Chongoene, Gaza province, and the situation room at the State House for high-level briefings.

Access due to damaged road infrastructure remains a challenge in most areas. UNHAS flights to affected areas are available.

The UNDAC team has fully deployed to Mozambique, the UNDAC deployment includes an eight-person OCHA core team and 11 operational partners: 2 from IHP, 2 from WFP, 3 from Atlas Logistique, 3 from iMMAP/MAP Action, and 1 from WHO.
