Flash Update No.3 – Heavy rains and floods in central and southern Mozambique (As of 18 January 2026)

Attachments

  • Heavy rains since mid-December have caused widespread flooding in Gaza, Maputo, and Sofala provinces, with several river basins above alert levels.
  • Over 400,000 people have been affected, with numbers expected to rise as rains continue in Mozambique and floodwater persists. Gaza is the most affected province. Evacuations are ongoing amid significant risks to health facilities, schools and critical infrastructure.
  • The Government of Mozambique appealed to the United Nations and the international community for search and rescue (including air and road assets), logistical and technical support (civil engineering and disaster management), and overall life-saving humanitarian aid.
  • The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has established a mobile Emergency Operation Center in Gaza and is overseeing the humanitarian response; UN and humanitarian organisations are providing multisectoral humanitarian support with expertise in emergency coordination, child protection, water, sanitation and hygiene and displacement monitoring. Humanitarian partners are mobilizing search and rescue; the Virtual OSOCC has been activated. Additional funding is required for supplies and services.
