SITUATION: Rains have continued
to fall in Mozambique and other parts of southern Africa where further
needs assessments have been conducted by Action by Churches Together (ACT)
International. The worst floods on record in Mozambique have displaced
at least 360,000 people. The official number of dead has been estimated
at about 500 in Mozambique alone and expected to rise further as the floodwaters
slowly recede and more bodies are discovered.
RESPONSE: ACT issued an initial
appeal Feb. 24, and has received $2.8 million. Now that appeal (AFMZ01)
for Mozambique has been revised, with a new appeal target of $10,251,175,
and the balance requested from the ACT network set at $5,487,991.
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF), the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) and the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM) are proposing projects with food, non-food, shelter, health and water sanitation, food security and agriculture, hygiene and education components.
CWS 's own appeal -- #976416 for $2.6 million, expanded on March 20, 2000 -- is supporting efforts to help CCM; IPM; the Council of Churches of Madagascar; FIKRIFAMA of Madagascar; and the South Africa Council of Churches (SACC). An ACT appeal on Madagascar will be forthcoming next week.
CWS support to date:
$103,000 to SACC for blankets in Zimbabwe; $110,000 to CCM to support resettlement kits; $15,000 to SACC to support SACC volunteers for CCM.
