Much-needed relief goods will begin arriving
in flood-stricken Mozambique over the weekend. Four cargo aircraft will
fly from Denmark with 160 metric tons of plastic sheeting, emergency food,
water purification tablets, tents, blankets, small motorboats, kitchen
sets and medicines to cover some 20,000 people for three months against
a number of common diseases. The airlift is partly sponsored by the international
emergency alliance, Action by Churches Together, that includes Lutheran
World Relief.
In Mozambique the Lutheran World Federation
and the Red Cross will handle distribution. The medicines on board will
cover some 20,000 people against common post-disaster illnesses for three
months. The flights are also sponsored by the Danish Red Cross and the
Danish government.
LWF is carrying out relief work on behalf of ACT in several parts of Mozambique providing food, temporary shelter, water supply and re-settlement of families who've lost their homes (see following story).
LWR is providing emergency funds of $30,000 and recently landed a 50-ton, $475,000 shipment of blankets, quilts and health and school kits in Maputo. Other measures are in process.
