Heavy rains and flooding in Mozambique have affected 600,000 people as of 19 January 2026, with projections rising to 1.1 million, according to the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD). Prolonged flooding and controlled dam releases are worsening the situation, leading to widespread displacement. About 392,000 people have been forced from their homes, many of which are vulnerable adobe structures. The floods have also caused significant damage to health facilities, roads, and essential infrastructure, especially in Gaza Province, which accounts for 75% of those affected.
In support of Government-led relief efforts, humanitarian partners are scaling up lifesaving and life-sustaining assistance. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has prioritized needs and response in a plan, which consolidates the appeals from the humanitarian community, asking for $187 million to assist 600,000 people.
