Baptist World Aid Gives $5,000 to Help Cyclone Damaged Mozambique

Baptist World Aid has made an initial grant of $5,000 available to assist relief efforts following floods and Cyclone Eline in Mozambique. The worst flooding in 50 years has already killed 150 people and it is estimated that 800,000 people have been affected. Many are now at risk from water-borne disease, malaria and hunger. The United Nations has announced that families living along the Limpopo Valley had no clean water, and that outbreaks of dysentery were rife.
BWAid's help will be channeled through the Baptist Convention of Mozambique, and funds will be used to provide water purifying tablets, medicines and food. A Boys home run by the Convention in Maputo has suffered severe damage, and BWAid will be considering assisting in its repair.

The cyclone has also brought heavy rainfall to northern South Africa and Zimbabwe, following on from heavy rains in these countries and Botswana.

Former BWA staff member, Regina Claas, is keeping BWAid informed about the situation from her work with the Baptist Convention of South Africa. She reports that Eduardo de Melo of the European Baptist Mission is working with the Mozambique Convention to assess the situation. First hand reports from the rural areas should be brought to the Convention meetings in Beira on March 5. Claas has already indicated the urgent need for water purifying tablets and small riverboats.

BWAid has launched a special appeal to assist flood and cyclone victims in Southern Africa. Donations may be designated Southern Africa Flood and Cyclone Relief and sent to:
