On 8 February, another powerful storm, named Marta, hit northern Morocco, just days after the region was battered by storm Leonardo. The new storm brought heavy rainfall, triggering flash floods and landslides, which resulted in fatalities and widespread damage. Among the hardest-hit cities were Tangier, Salé, and Casablanca.
As of 8 February, media reports indicate at least four deaths and one person missing in a village near Tétouan. The storm has caused fuel shortages and disruptions in livestock supply, while landslides in the Chefchaouen province destroyed around 60 homes.
This latest event follows closely on the heels of Storm Leonardo, which struck the region just days earlier. That storm overwhelmed dams and rivers, damaging homes and crops, causing minor landslides, and forcing over 150 000 people to evacuate.
Over the next 48 hours, northern Morocco is expected to receive additional moderate rainfall with isolated heavy downpours.
