Mongolia: Snow and sand storm Information bulletin
This bulletin is being issued for information only, and reflects the current situation and details available at this time. The Mongolian Red Cross Society (MRCS), with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has determined that external assistance is not required, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors at this time.
The situation On 25 November 2018, strong wind of 20-30 m/s swept across Bayan-Ulgii, Govi-Altai, Uvs, Khovd provinces and the speed of wind reached 40 m/s in Bugat soum of GoviAltai province causing strong snow and sand storm which resulted a number of missing people and livestock, injuries, electricity cut off due to fall of electrical substation, construction wreckage. Local emergency management agency and police, local authorities are in coordination to take action in the affected areas.
In Uvs province, “Western Energy System” company which provides electricity toward destination of Umnugovi, Turgen soums had its four pole mounts of 110 kW, nine pole mounts of 220 kW wrecked due to the storm. Due to the wreckage, 13 soums of Bayan-Ulgii province, six soums of Govi-Altai province, 20 soums of Uvs province, 13 soums of Khovd province and as of 25 November 2018, a total of 52 soums are having power outage.
According the National Emergency Management Agency, 173 people with 26 technical equipment from “national network of electricity distribution” government company are working to get the substation back to work.
