Mongolia – Severe weather (DG ECHO, NEMA, IFRC, Media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 22 May 2023)

  • Strong winds, heavy dust, and snowstorms have been affecting several parts of Mongolia since May 19, causing casualties and infrastructure damage.

  • According to the latest International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) update, at least one person has died, 16 others are missing, and 1,000 households have been affected, including infrastructure and livestock losses.

  • Local officials issued an early warning to nomadic herders and drivers, in particular, to take extra precautions against possible disasters.

  • The Mongolia Red Cross Society has initiated a rapid needs assessment and is distributing cash and livestock care items to the affected families. The Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) predicts that the current stormy weather will continue in the next few days.
