Key messages

•Agricultural production was sharply reduced by a severe drought in 2012. Cereal grain production dropped by 51% compared to previous year’s, potatoes by 48%, vegetables by 36% and sunflower by 31%. Livestock production was marginally affected.

•Rural households have been hardly hit by the drought in particular small farmers and agricultural workers in the Southern and Central regions of the country.

•Food prices increased by 3% during the last quarter of 2012. They were on average 5% higher than in same period of 2011.

•Cereal imports in 2012 were 6% over 2011 level in volume but the import bill was 26% higher, reflecting international price trends.
