TROPICAL STORM NINA - UNDRO SITUATION REPORT NO. 1

SITUATION

1. FOLLOWING AN OFFICIAL REQUEST TO UNDRO FOR AN INTERNATIONAL APPEAL TO BE LAUNCHED THE UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE HAS REPORTED THAT:

2. DURING THE EARLY HOURS OF THE 21ST NOVEMBER, TRUK WAS DEVASTATED BY TROPICAL STORM NINA WITH WINDS EXEEDING 80 KNOTS. MOEN ISLAND, TRUK STATE CENTRE IS WITHOUT ELECTRICITY AND WATER AND ONLY 2 TELEPHONE LINES ARE PRESENTLY WORKING.

3. TO DATE, FOUR CONFIRMED DEATHS, ONE MISSING, THREE CRITICALLY INJURED AND SCORES OF MINOR INJURIES. HUNDREDS ARE HOMELESS AND TEMPORARILY SHELTERED IN UNDAMAGED PUBLIC BUILDINGS. ABOUT 95 PERCENT OF CROPS DAMAGED OR DESTROYED. SEWAGE SYSTEM CLOGGED BY DEBRIS AND LACK OF RUNNING WATER POSES SERIOUS HEALTH HAZARD. ESTIMATED TOTAL DAMAGES VALUED AT APPROX. US DLRS 6 MILLION.

4. THE STATE BEGAN A FEEDING PROGRAMME FOR VICTIMS ON 25 NOVEMBER, FSM PRESIDENT JOHN R HAGLELGAM DECLARED TRUK STATE A MAJOR DISASTER AREA, AND CALLED SPECIAL SESSION OF THE FSM CONGRESS 30 NOVEMBER TO APPROPRIATE EMERGENCY FUNDS.

5. AN ESTIMATED SUM OF 50,000 US DLRS. IS REQUIRED FOR IMMEDIATE PURCHASE OF EMERGENCY FOOD, CLOTHING AND MEDICINES.

6. DONORS ARE KINDLY REQUESTED TO REPORT TO UNDRO DIRECTLY PREFERABLY BY TELEX (28148 UNDR CH), OF THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS IN QUANTITY AND CORRESPONDING VALUE.
