Secretary-General, saddened by destruction in Mexico, offers condolences, UN support

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction that have been caused by floods and mudslides in southeastern Mexico. He offers his sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government of Mexico. He noted the valiant efforts of the Government to assist the affected areas, and extends his assurances that the United Nations is ready to support these efforts should it be required.
