Mexico Volcano Situation Report No. 1

1. Regarding the activity of the Popocatepetl Volcano (some 60 km west of Mexico City) , the UNDP/DHA Resident Representative reports, after contact with the Government authorities, that the red alert status has been lifted and that it now stands at yellow alert status. The activity of the volcano has not increased, nor have significant structural changes occurred. The crater of the volcano faces away from Mexico City towards the bordering state of Puebla.

2.Preparedness measures are undertaken: the villages on the outskirts of the volcano (total population: 102, 000) are provided with ongoing information. The National Disaster Prevention Centre emits, every two hours, a report on the status on the activities of the volcano.
