DHA-GENEVA INFORMATION REPORT NO. 1

1. ACCORDING TO LATEST LOCAL REPORTS, 20 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND MORE THAN 1,000 MADE HOMELESS AFTER HEAVY RAINS PROVOKED MUDSLIDES AND THE COLLAPSE OF RICKETY HOMES IN NORTHERN CITY OF
TIJUANA, BORDERING CALIFORNIA, ON 7/8 JANUARY 1993. THOUSANDS MORE WERE LEFT WITHOUT ELECTRICITY OR POTABLE WATER. MOST AFFECTED AREAS WERE POOR NEIGHBOURHOODS WITH UNPAVED ROADS PERCHED ON STEEP SLOPES.

2. PRESIDENT OF MEXICO AUTHORIZED ALLOCATION OF USD 66 MILLION FROM FEDERAL BUDGET TO HELP HOMELESS AND ORDERED ARMY TO ASSIST IN RELIEF OPERATIONS, WHICH ARE HANDLED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES. GOVERNOR OF BAJA CALIFORNIA DECLARED STATE OF EMERGENCY IN TIJUANA.

3. US GOVT PLEDGED USD 25,000 CASH GRANT. SAN DIEGO (CALIFORNIA) SENT FIRE AND RESCUE TEAMS TO TIJUANA.

4. MEXICAN GOVERNMENT HAS INFORMED UNDP OFFICE MEXICO THAT NO FURTHER INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED.

5. NO MORE REPORTS ARE PLANNED ON THIS EMERGENCY, BARRING UNFORESEEN EVENTS.
