The death toll of the 8.1 M magnitude earthquake that occurred near the southwestern coasts of Chiapas State on 8 September 4.49 UTC at a depth of 70 km, has now reached 61 fatalities. Chiapas and Oaxaca are the states where most damages have been registered; in particular, the municipality of Juchitán where most of the victims occurred. At this stage, no critical needs are being confirmed or identified by the government or the UN. However, the number of houses that have been destroyed or rendered inhabitable still remains unknown, the number of people in shelters is estimated at up to 10 000. There are no confirmed reports of important damages to critical infrastructure, although according to media at least one hospital in Juchitán is severely damaged. Power and water supply to affected areas is being restored. Hurricane Katia is expected to complicate the delivery of relief supplies to the hard-hit regions.
