Mexico - Colima volcano update 31 May 2002

As of the 30th of May, the Universidad de Colima has reported that the seismic signals tremor type presented/displayed a greater amplitude with respect to reported day 28. They continue the signals associated to landslides and degasifications. The nocturnal registry of images in infrared detected around 70 landslides in 11 hours. 6 exhalations with incandescence were observed in addition. The landslides continue appearing by the South sector - Southwestern. The measurements of the inclinometer show a stable behaviour, that is to say, they do not register deformation. The measurement of distanciometer made from the Snow-covered volcano does not show significant variations. The measurements of sulfur dioxide emission indicate a value average of 777 tons per day, not being appraised last important variations in the three measurements made in this month. The possibility stays, in the short term, of a scene that could be included/understood between the eruptive events of 1999 (moderate explosions) and 1913 (great explosions), whose development could happen in a matter of hours from the beginning of the event. In agreement with the previous thing, the state systems of Civil defense of Colima and Jalisco continue with the preventive evacuation of the communities of Marijuana (Sights on) and Juan Barragán, El Agostadero, Los Machos and El Borbollón (Jalisco). The Colima volcano is currently at the ORANGE alert level.
