Lesser Antilles, the Caribbean, Mexico, USA - Hurricane BERYL, update (DG ECHO, Copernicus EMSR, GDACS, IOM, FEMA) (ECHO Daily Flash of 12 July 2024)

  • Hurricane BERYL affected the Windward Islands, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico from July 1-7, causing heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surges, and floods, leading to casualties and damage. The hardest-hit areas were Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, and Texas (USA).
  • In Texas, eight fatalities and 641 evacuees in 19 shelters by July 11. Grenada saw six fatalities, two missing persons, 27 injuries, and 6,981 affected people. St. Vincent and the Grenadines reported five fatalities, over 1,000 evacuees in 47 shelters, and 4,800 affected individuals. Jamaica experienced three fatalities, 60 injuries, and widespread power outages affecting 70% of the population. Venezuela reported six fatalities and 32,000 people affected by floods.
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR734) produced 15 maps showing significant building damage.
  • The Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) deployed experts from Germany, Sweden, and Spain for environmental and debris management. France delivered 20 tonnes of shelter and non-food items to Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines on July 6-7, while Ireland offered water, sanitation, shelter, tools, and generators; offer was accepted and transport is under planning.
