Lesser Antilles, the Caribbean, Mexico, USA - Hurricane BERYL, update (Copernicus EMSR, GDACS, NOAA, FEMA, WHO PAHO, UNICEF ) (ECHO Daily Flash of 09 July 2024)

  • On 8 July, BERYL made landfall over Texas Gulf coast with maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h (Cat. 1 hurricane). On 9 July, its centre was located over north-eastern Texas with maximum sustained winds of 56 km/h (tropical depression).
  • In Jamaica UNICEF reports two fatalities and 1,876 evacuated people (160 shelters). UN OCHA reports ten fatalities, 2,362 evacuated people (62 shelters), 30 injured people and two missing across Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In Texas, FEMA reports 127 evacuated people (seven shelters).
  • The Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMSR734) was activated in rapid mapping mode on 1 July and 14 maps were produced so far.
  • The Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) response includes the deployment of two EU environmental damage assessment experts (Germany and Sweden) to join the UNDAC teams in Jamaica and Barbados and further exploration of support with debris management experts. France offered and delivered shelter and non-food items through the UCPM to Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines during 6-7 July. The latest request for assistance came from Jamaica on 8 July, consisting of shelter, WASH, Non-Food items, search and rescue and medical items.
