EMERGENCY ACCOUNT #976720 for $100,000

SITUATION: The worst flooding to hit Mexico in 40 years has now killed at least 425 people and has driven 270,000 persons from their homes, Reuters reported. There are other reports that the massive flooding and resulting mudslides have affected some 318,000 people.

The problems are expected to worsen, as strong rains persist in Mexico, the national Meteorological Service said earlier this week, in part because of Tropical Storm Irene.

Flooding last week had caused massive problems throughout central and southern Mexico and had followed an earthquake centered in Oaxaca, which was believed to have worsened the situation by destabilizing hillside villages. The government of Mexico has now asked for international assistance with this disaster, something it had initially resisted.

RESPONSE: CWS has dispersed $47,000 in blanket funds to six local partners.

These partners and the amounts dispersed are:

Good Pastor Baptist Church, Oaxaca ($5,000)
Social Pastoral Commission of the Archdiocese of Oaxaca ($15,000)
Bartolome Carrasco Human Rights Center, Oaxaca ($5,000)
General Assembly of the National Presbyterian Church, Tabasco ($10,000)
Popular Communication Center, Puebla ($5,000)
Survivors Assistance Committee, Chiapas ($7,000).

In addition, Samuel Lobato, CWS-Mexico, will be conducting an assessment visit with the local partners next week. Once that assessment is completed, longer-term rehabilitation needs will be known and this appeal will be revised.

The initial appeal, issued Oct. 8, 1999, is for $100,000. Of that amount, CWS is seeking at least $50,000 in direct support for food, plastic sheeting and some clothing by the local partners.
