MAURITIUS - CYCLONE BELLA
UNDRO INFORMATION REPORT NO.1

1. SINCE END JANUARY, AND CONTINUING THROUGH EARLY FEBRUARY, CYCLONE BELLA HAS PASS THE ISLAND OF RODRIGUES WITH WINDS OF UP TO 210 KM/H, AND CAUSED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE TO HOUSES, ELECTRICTY, WATER SUPPLY, ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNICATIONS.

2. UNDRO/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORTED THE GOVT'S PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT AS FOLLOWS:

HOUSES: MORE THAN 300 HOUSES COMPLETELY DAMAGED AND ABOUT 1,200 PARTLY OR SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.

ROADS: 30% OF ROADS DAMAGED.

ELECTRICITY: 75% OF ELECTRICITY SYSTEM COMPLETELY DAMAGED.

WATER SUPPLY: WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM BROKEN DOWN AS A WHOLE DUE TO LACK OF ELECTRICITY.

SCHOOLS: 30 CLASSES SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.

AGRICULTURE: WHOLE CROP COMPLETELY DAMAGED. A LARGE NUMBER OF LIVESTOCK LOST.

3. IN ORDER TO RESTORE WATER SUPPLY, FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED. 1) 15,000 FEET OF GALVANIZED PIPES. 2) 3 STAND-BY GENERATORS.

4. UNDRO CONTINUES MONITORING SITUATION IN CONTACT WITH UN AGENCIES.
