WFP’s refugee response in the Mbera camp: In September and October, WFP delivered cash assistance to 68,197 highly vulnerable refugees (35,462 women), with a ration of MRU 450 (US$ 12) per person. In October, WFP Mauritania reallocated the remaining food from Japan’s generous contribution to this month's in-kind distribution. A total of 64,700 people (35,391 women) received a daily ration of rice, oil, and salt in September, while 68,068 people (35,395 women) received this assistance in October. To manage moderate acute malnutrition in the camp, 574 children aged 6-59 months (274 girls) received specialized nutritious food in September, while 495 children (264 girls) were treated for malnutrition in October. During each distribution, systematic screening and awareness-raising sessions on essential family practices were carried out for health centre auxiliaries under the supervision of the cooperating partner ADICOR (Appui au Développement Intégré des Communautés Rurales). Since October is the back-to-school month, WFP provided two hot meals a day through its school meals programme to 5,294 primary school children (2,638 girls) enrolled in seven schools across the camp under the supervision of the cooperating partner ONG ESD (Ensemble Solidarité Développement).

2023 lean season response: In September and October, WFP carried out its fourth and final cycle of lean season assistance in four departments: Kaédi, Lexeiba, M'Bout, and Ould Yenge. A total of 79,642 people received US$ 922,423. To ensure widespread coverage, WFP used the Social Registry payment platform, achieving a 78 percent coverage rate. As an integral part of the Government's capacity-strengthening initiative, WFP actively participated in a technical workshop designed to enhance understanding and harness the full potential of the payment and monitoring platform. WFP shared its experience of using the platform, including challenges encountered, as well as expectations and prospects.

School meals programme: In September, food was prepositioned in 390 schools in the three regions of Assaba,
Guidimakha, and Hodh El Chargui. WFP planned to serve 50,000 children with 326 mt of food for the 2023-2024 school year. Schools opened on 4 October but in some schools, teachers’ absences delayed the start of the programme. Treatment of moderate acute malnutrition: In October, 5,597 children aged 6-59 months (2,910 girls) and 1,290 pregnant and breastfeeding women received specialized nutritious food in 470 health centres.
Capacity-strengthening: In September, the World Bank and WFP jointly held a meeting with the management of the Social Register to launch continuous updates for the targeting exercise.
