HIGHLIGHTS

  • Climate-related shocks devastated West and Central Africa in 2024. Floods, in particular, impacted more than 7.2 million people across 17 out of 24 countries in the region.
  • Elections took place in several countries at the end of 2023 and during 2024, in some cses triggering political instability and social unrest, including the disruption of critical social services.
  • 2024 saw a rapid increase in mpox cases across the region, with the Clade 1b strain particularly impacting children. The majority of cases were in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (64,153 confirmed cases), but cases were confirmed as far away as Liberia (353 confirmed cases).
  • The armed conflict in the Central Sahel continued to impact the broader region, particularly in the neighbouring countries of Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin. Mauritania also received over 243,000 Malian refugees by the end of 2024.
