FAO Project Highlights : Support for building the resilience of Agro-pastoral households affected by the 2022 floods in Mauritania

Objective

To build the capacity of flood-affected households to better withstand shocks by reviving and diversifying their livelihoods.

Activities implemented

• Established agropastoral Farmer Field Schools comprising 600 households focusing on agro-silvo-pastoral productivity and profitable agricultural market-linkages.

• Distributed 12 tonnes of traditional rainfed seeds (sorghum, maize, beans) to 2 000 households.

• Distributed 12 tonnes of floodplain crops seeds to 2 000 agropastoral households.

• Distributed 40 tonnes of short-cycle rice seeds to 1 287 households to be planted in the irrigation areas of 20 villages.

• Distributed vegetable seed kits, fertilizers and tools to 20 market gardening cooperatives comprising 600 households, of which 90 percent were headed by women.

• Distributed 2 000 goats and 50 tonnes of livestock feed to 1 000 livestock raising households.

• Organized awareness raising sessions among livestock farmers on good farming practices, hygiene and disease prevention, as well as on livestock feeding.

• Organized capacity building training for 40 veterinary assistants on animal health.

• Trained 275 households on gender-sensitive approaches such as the integrated approach of the caisses de résilience.
