UNHCR first established its presence in Malta in 2005 and monitors access to territory and reception, while promoting fair and efficient asylum procedures in line with international standards.

As of the end of August 2024, Malta had issued 2,813 Temporary Protection certificates since the full-scale war in Ukraine began in 2022, with 68 per cent of certificates issued to women and children.

As of the end of August 2024, Malta has recorded approximately 8,843 refugees and 738 asylum-seekers, primarily from Ukraine, Syria, and Libya.

HIGHLIGHTS

Malta’s First National Education Strategy

Malta launched its first-ever Education Strategy for 2024- 2030. This groundbreaking strategy introduces several initiatives aimed at enhancing equality and inclusion, with a strong emphasis on cultural diversity and the development of intercultural understanding. UNHCR played a role in the public consultation process that shaped the final strategy.

Digital literacy courses

Through a grant agreement, Spark 15, a Refugee-Led Organization provided digital literacy courses to forcibly displaced and stateless persons to improve their employment prospects in Malta.

World Refugee Day 2024

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, state actors, civil society, refugee-led organisations and refugee communities joined UNHCR in celebrating Refugee Week Malta through a series of colourful and enriching cultural and sports events.
