Nurturing hope and resilience in the face of climate change

By Ibrahima Diallo, ad interim Country Director

As the floodwaters recede in Mali, the impact of the recent heavy rains continues to affect communities across the country. Thousands have been displaced, crops destroyed, and food insecurity levels remain worrisome.

In the face of such adversity, affected populations urgently need immediate and long-term relief. Amidst the adversity, the resilience of the Malian people shines through. Communities are rallying together, supporting one another, and working tirelessly to rebuild their lives. In partnership with the government, we are working tirelessly to continue supporting affected communities nationwide.

Recent field visits to communities in Gao and Segou have allowed us to witness firsthand the devastating impact of the floods and to deliver much-needed relief. However, they cannot confront this complex crisis alone.

The World Food Programme (WFP)'s emergency food and nutritional assistance is a lifeline for crisis- affected families in Mali. Since January, including during the lean season from May to September, WFP has provided aid to over 1 million people, including internally displaced persons and refugees.

Beyond providing essential food and cash assistance to vulnerable families, building resilient food systems is paramount. This involves empowering communities to implement sustainable initiatives that address the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition.

By adopting climate-smart agricultural practices and improving market systems, we can strengthen social protection systems, enhance anticipatory actions, and reduce vulnerability to future shocks.

We must prioritize climate action and invest in long-term solutions to support Mali's efforts to adapt to climate change and build resilience. This includes promoting sustainable agriculture practices and strengthening early warning systems. Addressing climate change can protect vulnerable communities and safeguard our planet for future generations.

In this complex humanitarian landscape, every effort, no matter how small, contributes to alleviating suffering and rebuilding Mali's future. By working together, we can help Mali mitigate the impacts of future climate-related disasters and ensure a sustainable future for its people.
