This Weekly Bulletin focuses on public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African region. This week’s articles cover:
- Floods in Mali
- Mpox in Ghana
For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation, is provided.
A table is provided at the end of the bulletin with information on all new and ongoing public health events currently being monitored in the region, as well as recent events that have been controlled and closed.
Major issues include
Several countries within the African region have experienced flooding in recent months. Mali is dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding that has displaced nearly 90 000 people nationwide. The floods have caused widespread damage, with critical infrastructure like roads and bridges being destroyed, leaving many communities disrupted from essential services. Displacement sites are overcrowded, and sanitation is worsening, raising fears about potential outbreaks of diseases like cholera. This combination of displacement, damaged infrastructure, and rising health risks makes it crucial to have a coordinated disaster response and public health interventions to prevent the situation from worsening.
