Since 2019, the ten Sahel countries have experienced a sharp deterioration in security, characterised by an ongoing increase in conflict-related incidents, primarily in the Liptako-Gourma region (comprising Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger). This instability has been exacerbated by the increasing complexity of the overlapping zones of influence of various armed groups, local militias and self-defence groups, which makes security management and humanitarian access challenging. The expansion of these groups has been accompanied by a growing mistrust of the United Nations and its partners, who are often perceived as being biased. There has been a significant rise in attacks on humanitarian workers, vehicles and warehouses, health centres and schools, severely limiting the capacity of humanitarian organisations to reach vulnerable populations effectively.
