Highlights
- Political and Security Situation: Mali continues to face significant socio-political challenges, including political instability, a renewed transition process, and the withdrawal of ECOWAS. The security situation in 2024 remained volatile, marked by frequent clashes between Malian security forces and armed groups, blockades in the northern and central regions, and spillover violence in the south.
- Nutritional Crisis: Food insecurity remained a major concern, with an estimated 2.5 million people affected in 2024. Approximately 268,000 children suffered from severe acute malnutrition (SAM). UNICEF has supported the treatment of 207,095 children aged 6–59 months for SAM across health and community facilities.
- Climate Impact: Since April, Mali has experienced unprecedented flooding, exacerbated by climate change. Heavy rains and rising Niger River levels have affected 351,221 people, including 155,084 children, resulting in 86 deaths, extensive property damage, and mass displacement. Due to the crisis, the government postponed the reopening of schools by one month.
