Mali is currently hosting more than 165,000 Burkinabe and Nigerien refugees, following a significant influx of people fleeing instability in both countries. Most arrivals come from Burkina Faso’s Sahel region and various areas of Niger, driven by fear, insecurity, and the impact of attacks and incursions by non-state armed groups, as well as military operations targeting these groups. 23%
The majority of refugees have been jointly registered by the Government of Mali and UNHCR in locations where access was possible. However, an estimated 9,000 individuals remain unregistered. If funding and operational conditions allow, these individuals will be prioritized in continuous refugee registration and documentation activities planned for 2026.
