UNFPA Mali Situation Report - March 2025

Attachments

Mali remains entrenched in a complex humanitarian crisis, marked by escalating security, political instability, and humanitarian challenges. In March 2025, armed groups intensified their activities, resulting in violent clashes, which led to significant population displacement. Women and girls continue to bear the brunt of this violence, with their rights and safety increasingly at risk.

To address the urgent needs, UNFPA pre-positioned Inter-Agency Emergency Health (IARH) kits in health districts to provide care for childbirth and related complications for pregnant women, as well as referral, evacuation, and medical support for gender-based violence (GBV) survivors. Three mobile teams have also been deployed to offer integrated sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and GBV services, while distributing dignity kits and menstrual kits to women and girls.

However, the sudden termination of U.S. funding has caused the cessation of key humanitarian programmes, leaving thousands stranded without critical life-saving assistance, further exacerbating the vulnerabilities of populations already affected by ongoing conflicts. The impact has been particularly severe on GBV services, with over 191,000 people losing access to essential protection, and SRH services, including maternal care and family planning, which has left over 200,000 people at risk.

In 2025, UNFPA aims to mobilize $16.5 million, of which only $2.9 million has been secured. Without urgent additional funding, the scale and sustainability of SRH and GBV programmes in Mali is at risk.
