Mali - Conflict and protection incidents against civilians (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 04 July 2024)

  • On the evening of 1 July, the non-state armed group carried out an attack on the locality of Djuiguibombo in the central region of Mopti, allegedly home to a post of the Dana Ambassagou self-defence group. According to residents and community representatives, 21 people were killed and an unknown number were missing.
  • The central and northern regions are plagued by an increase of violence and insecurity, directly impacting civilians. Across Mali, protection incidents have increased a 123% from the first quarter of 2023 to the same period of 2024. Serious violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and human rights continue to be reported.
  • This has led to a dire humanitarian situation with over 1.6 million people in need of protection assistance. Despite the growing needs on this matter, only a 22.5% of the requested funding for the protection sector has been secured under the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan.
