After the localities of Ségou, Bla, Macina, Mopti, Sofara; the region of Kayes was chosen by the Minister of Health and Social Development, to bring national solidarity to the populations victims of the floods and the release of water from the Manantali dam.
It was in a friendly atmosphere that Doctor Colonel Assa Badiallo TOURE and his strong delegation composed of humanitarian partners, namely the Resident Representative of the United Nations system, representatives of UNICEF, OCHA, WFP and the Canadian Ambassador to Mali; members of his cabinet and National and General Directors, were welcomed with all honors at the Dag Dag airport in Kayes by the Governor of the region, General Moussa SOUMARE. On the occasion, the Governor of Kayes was surrounded by members of his cabinet and the Regional Directors of Health and Social Development.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System, Khassim DIAGNE, said that the floods constitute a serious humanitarian concern and that the United Nations agencies have decided to make their contributions to the populations affected by natural disasters, in support of the initiatives of the government and humanitarian partners of Mali.
As for the Canadian Ambassador to Mali, Nicolas SIMARD, he stressed that his country is working towards a win-win partnership through multifaceted support in the context of health projects (Clef, Yellen, etc.). He welcomed the contribution of Canadian mining companies to the promotion of maternal and neonatal health, education and the promotion of new and renewable energies in the Kayes region. He recalled that Canada, whose partnership with Mali will continue, has granted one million dollars or five hundred and fifty million CFA francs in humanitarian aid to Mali.
The Minister Commissioner for Food Security, Redouane Ag Mohamed Ali, recalled the operationalization of the Unified Social Register (RSU) which will allow all members of the food security system to be at the same level of information regarding the situation of vulnerable populations. He recalled the actions undertaken in the regions of Gao, Bougouni, Sikasso, Koutiala, Kayes (Yélimané) in favor of flood victims in addition to the planning of the national food insecurity response program 2024 currently underway.
For his part, the Minister of Health and Social Development stressed that the Kayes region recorded 15 cases of flooding, affecting 792 households made up of 6,273 people affected and 6 cases of death. To alleviate the suffering of the populations affected by these scourges, the Minister and her humanitarian partners provided food and non-food items consisting of 48 tons of rice; 20 tons of millet; 136 cans of oil; 470 shelter kits; 100 NFI kits; 136 household kits, medicines and consumables; cash transfer assistance to 1,843 disaster-affected households for an amount of more than 116 million CFA francs; school kits and dignity kits for a value of more than 201 million CFA francs.
And the minister specified that this gesture will continue through other actors for the well-being of all those affected by the floods. She took this opportunity to thank the main partners for their promptness in responding to assistance for the populations in distress.
Visibly happy, the representative of the victims congratulated the government and humanitarian partners for their assistance since the start of the floods and expressed blessings for the country and its leaders.
Previously, the Minister began his mission, as is his custom, with a courtesy visit to the religious and customary notables of the city. They thanked the Minister and his delegation for this mark of respect and consideration. The traditional legitimacies praised the success of the recent cervical and breast cancer screening campaign as well as the various food and non-food donation actions. They all expressed their support for the approach of the Department of Health and Development, which consists of coordinating support actions for disaster-stricken populations, and formulated "douwaou" so that Mali can successfully complete the transition.
