The Indian Government has granted a budget support aid of US$ 2.4 million, on learning about the serious financial difficulties the Maldives is facing on account of the tsunami and related factors and increasing fuel prices.
In a letter to the President, Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, noted the spirit of friendship and great value placed by the Indian Government on the good neighbourly ties with the Maldives.
In a press statement issued by the President's Office, the President thanked the Indian President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian Government and the people of India, on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives for the generous assistance.
