In order to alleviate the water crisis in Malé, capital of the Maldives, the Chinese government continues to provide emergency assistance to the Maldives. Loaded with nearly 700 tons of fresh water, a Chinese Navy submarine rescue ship named Changxing Island which could produce over 70 tons of desalted water every day arrived in Malé in the evening of December 7 local time and started to supply water to the Maldivian people through its own sea water desalination facilities. Two Ilyushin Il-76 aircrafts of the Chinese Air Force loaded with 40 tons of drinking water arrived in the Maldives at dawn on December 8 local time, and a supplies transfer ceremony was held. The Chinese government and China-funded enterprises in Sri Lanka and the Maldives continue to airlift a total of 65 tons of drinking water to the Maldives through civil aviation flights. The Maldivian Presidential Palace and Ministry of Foreign Affairs highly appreciated and thanked for the emergency assistance provided by China. China will also actively take follow-up assistance measures into consideration at the request of the Maldives.
