Heavy rainfall from 13–15 September triggered flash floods and landslides, impacting the cities of Kota Kinabalu, Papar, and Penampang in Sabah state, northern Borneo Island, Malaysia. These incidents have caused fatalities and damage.
As of 16 September, media reports indicate 14 deaths, including seven from a landslide in Kota Kinabalu, with the remainder resulting from building collapses and drowning. Additionally, 2,468 people have been displaced across Beaufort, Penampang, Tawau, Membakut, Papar, and Putatan, sheltering in 20 relief centres.
Outages in electricity and water supplies have been reported, alongside several collapsed and closed roads.
Over the next 48 hours, additional rainfall, including isolated heavy to very heavy downpours, is forecast across Sabah state.
