WFP Response

  • WFP is complementing the Government’s maize distribution with two months of food basket items (vegetable oil, pulses and CSB+), targeting 715,000 people in the four most-affected districts of Chikwawa, Mulanje, Nsanje, and Phalombe. As of 25 May 2023, WFP has reached 344,000 people.

  • WFP continues providing logistics support to the humanitarian community for the response to Cyclone Freddy. As of 25 May 2023, 8,100 mt of food and relief items have been transported on behalf of the humanitarian community to flood-affected areas over land, water, and air.

  • WFP commissioned two helicopters to deliver relief items to camps and affected communities that are currently inaccessible by road. As of 25 May 2023, 700 mt of food have been transported by air to hard-to-reach areas of Chikwawa, Mangochi, Mulanje, Nsanje, Phalombe and Zomba districts. To continue serving areas only accessible by air, WFP has extended the use of one helicopter through the end of May.

  • Under the home-grown school feeding programme, 183 schools (out of 216) have temporarily switched to in-kind feeding to allow sufficient time for farmers to recover from the shock in Chikwawa, Nsanje, Phalombe, and Zomba districts. Emergency school feeding take-home rations have begun for selected schools not covered under WFP’s regular school feeding programme.

WFP Early Recovery

  • WFP continues early recovery preparations to help vulnerable communities adapt and build resilience to the changing climate. In this phase, participants will build or maintain assets (community gardens, irrigation farming, flood mitigation structures) to improve livelihoods, create healthier natural environments and reduce the impacts of future shocks. WFP will provide assistance to 75,000 people using cash transfers to cover immediate food needs while asset creation contributes to strengthening resilience. Implementation scheduled to last from July 2023 to March 2024.
