Operational Updates
El Niño Response: WFP has procured 33,000 mt of maize and 317 mt of fortified corn-soya cereal blend. Food and cash-based transfers will be provided to acutely food-insecure households in the six districts of Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Machinga, Nsanje, and Phalombe. In August, capacity strengthening was conducted under Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) leadership with WFP support across 28 districts across the country. WFP plans to commence distributions in September.
Refugees: WFP provides cash transfers to refugees in Dzaleka Refugee Camp to maintain food and nutrition security amongst targeted households. In August 2024, WFP provided cash transfers to 49,746 refugees and asylum seekers. The ration size was also increased from 50 to 75 percent as a result of increased funding.
Nutrition: Supplementary feeding has resumed in four districts — Blantyre, Chikwawa, Machinga, and Nsanje — targeting all health facilities and addressing moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) in children aged 6 to 59 months.
Children in this age group receive fortified corn-soy blend with milk and sugar (Super Cereal Plus or CSB++). In addition, caregivers are provided with nutrition education and counselling to promote improved childcare and nutrition practices beyond the scope of facility-based interventions. Similar social behaviour change communication initiatives are being delivered through awareness campaigns in all WFP districts participating in the emergency El Niño response.
Livelihoods: WFP is supporting 31,600 households (approximately 142,000 individuals) through conditional cash transfers as part of its Food Assistance for Assets (FFA) activity across three districts: Chikwawa, Nsanje and Phalombe. In the past month, WFP reached all targeted beneficiaries (100 percent) with double cash distributions, covering the months of July and August 2024. The total transfer amounted to USD 1,913,000, with each beneficiary receiving approximately USD 60 for asset creation completed over the two months. Further distributions are scheduled to take place monthly until December 2024.
