This Weekly Bulletin focuses on public health emergencies occurring in the WHO African region. This week’s articles cover:
- Diphtheria in Guinea
- Cyclone Chido in Mozambique
For each of these events, a brief description, followed by public health measures implemented and an interpretation of the situation, is provided.
A table is provided at the end of the bulletin with information on all new and ongoing public health events currently being monitored in the region, as well as recent events that have been controlled and closed.
- Cyclone Chido, which began its path on 13 December 2024, has caused widespread devastation across multiple countries in southern Africa. Its impact includes significant loss of life, damage to infrastructure, and displacement of vulnerable populations. The most severely affected areas include Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province and parts of Malawi. Persistent rainfall and the risk of flash floods continue to pose challenges for emergency responders as the region grapples with the storm’s aftermath.
