Highlights:
- A state of disaster was declared in Malawi on 23 March 2024 in 23 of the country's 28 districts because of impacts of El Niño weather conditions.
- The country is facing a severe decline in food security with an estimated 5.7 million people expected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity between October 2024 and March 2025, increasing from an estimated 4.2 million people projected for the period of June to September 2024.
- Severe acute malnutrition admissions have increased by 18 per cent between January and May 2024 compared to the same period in 2023 (19,848 compared to 16,819 in 2023).
- Between January and June 2024, more than 1.2 million children under five years have been screened for acute malnutrition in 15 districts.
- Since the beginning of the year, UNICEF support has enabled more than 1.1 million people to access safe water in areas affected by floods and cholera.
