Over the reporting period, a total of 160 cross-border movements were observed at the Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs). The average daily number flows was 6. Mozambique (59%), Malawi (36%), United Republic of Tanzania (3%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (1%) were the main countries of departure, while Malawi (61%), Mozambique (39%) and United Republic of Tanzania (1%) were the main countries of intended destination of individuals passing through the different FMPs. The observed decrease in flow compared to previous months can be attributed to operational constraints, contextual environmental and security factors.
The reduction of Flow Monitoring Points (FMPs) along the Malawi-Mozambique corridor and the complete deactivation of all FMPs in the Tanzania—Malawi corridor, limited data collection capabilities. Furthermore, major external events, including security concerns and civil unrest following Mozambique’s 2023 general elections, which disrupted normal movement patterns. Seasonal changes, which brought changes to fishing and farming activities has reduced local short-term movements influencing migration trends, while the strong and often perilous weather conditions on Lake Malawi presented a formidable natural barrier to movement during this period.
