Following a WHO mission to Malawi, the reporting of cholera cases has been revised. As of 26 August 2002, a total of 773 cases and 41 deaths (case-fatality rate, 5.13%) were reported in the Nkhotakota area since the beginning of the year. From 5 May to 26 August, 339 cases and 25 deaths (case-fatality rate, 7.37%) were reported in the same area.
WHO, along with UNICEF is assisting the Ministry of Health in providing on-site training in case management and cholera control. UNICEF is providing additional supplies.
