The African Development Bank approves a US $ 500,000 grant for the emergency relief support for the victims of the 2001 floods in Malawi

ABIDJAN, 21 MAY 2001 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (ADB) approved today a grant of 500,000 US $ to finance the humanitarian emergency relief support for the victims of the 2001 floods in Malawi.

The objective of the humanitarian relief assistance is to alleviate the suffering of the victims of the 2001 floods in the southern and central districts of Malawi. It specifically seeks to prevent loss of human life and maintain the nutritional status of the displaced population in the seven most - hit areas affected by the flood namely, the districts of Chikwawa, Machinga, Mangochi, Nsanje, Phalombe and Zomba districts in the South Region, and Salima in the Central Region.

The Bank's intervention is part of a large holistic operation being mounted by bilateral and multilateral organizations. The Bank contribution will be used to procure, transport and distribute 1,310 mt of maize, 249 mt of pulses and 150 mt of likuni phala. The food basket will provide at least 1,900 kCal of energy per person per day, with children, particularly the under-five being properly fed.

Bank Group operations in Malawi started in 1969. To-date the Group has committed a total of about US$ 571.40 million for 56 operations. Of this amount, US $ 414.87 million have been disbursed.
